Student Chapter at Temple Law Hosts Guantanamo Documentary Screening

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, the Temple Law chapter of the American Constitution Society hosted a screening of Inside Guantanamo, a National Geographic Explorer documentary that offers unprecedented access to the detention facility in Cuba. The documentary focused not only on the daily routines of detainees and the guards, but told the evolving story of the military commissions controversy in the Supreme Court, from the Hamdi case through Hamdan v. Rumsfeld. Featuring interviews with former detainees, current Gitmo guards, and counsel for detainees and the government, the documentary aired all sides of the debate -- and kept attendees of the screening talking about the controversy for days afterward.

Innocent on Death Row

On Thursday, November 5, Harold Wilson spoke at the Temple University Beasley School of Law. Wilson spent 16 years on Pennsylvania's death row, convicted of three murder charges. DNA evidence eventually found him to be factually innocent. He now works with Witness to Innocence in speaking about his experiences and how citizens need to insist on the abolition of the death penalty and reform of the American criminal justice system. Sponsored by the Temple University chapter of the American Constitution Society, the Temple chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, the Pennsylvania Innocence Project, and Witness to Innocence, Wilson spoke to a crowded room of Temple law students about how he never gave up hope while incarcerated for the crimes he did not commit. He encouraged students to work for change in the criminal justice system and also shared how he rejected distractions such as television while in prison so that he could concentrate on his legal appeals. Before being freed due to DNA evidence, Wilson had to contend with ineffective assistance of counsel, government misconduct, and racially discriminatory jury selection.

100 Days to Restore the Constitution

On Thursday, February 26th, the Temple American Constitution Society held "100 Days to Restore the Constitution: Toward Justice and Accountability".

Professor David Kairys and Katherine Gallagher, a staff attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights, led a discussion on justice and accountability. Ms. Gallagher also presented key CCR cases that seek to hold those responsible for torture and extraordinary rendition accountable for their crimes. The event was well-attended and helped to inform the Temple population about the status of Guantanamo Bay detainees and a few cases were used to highlight the treatment undergone by detainees and the future of these individuals.
