Unfettered Discretion? Marc Van Der Hout and the L.A. Eight
Marc Van Der Hout and Khader Hamide were the lead counsel and lead defendant, respectively, in one of the longest running deportation cases in U.S. history. American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee v. Reno, also known as the “Los Angeles Eight”, spanned three decades and involved the U. S. Government’s attempt to deport lawful immigrant Palestinian activists for their support of the lawful activities of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (“PFLP”) because the PFLP had been deemed a terrorist organization. The case represents the ongoing struggle between protecting civil liberties and protecting national security, and the alarming consequences that are possible.
