On the evening of July 8, 2010, the Chicago Lawyer Chapter and co-sponsors National Lawyers Guild Chicago, ACLU of Illinois, the Midwest Regional Office of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Chicago Chapter of the National Conference of Black Lawyers, and the National Immigrant Justice Center hosted a program entitled “Protecting Our Constitutional Values: What America Needs from the Supreme Court.” The program convened a panel consisting of Colleen K. Connell, Executive Director, American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois and Member, American Constitution Society Chicago Lawyer Chapter Board of Advisors; Carol Brook, Federal Defender for the Northern District of Illinois; Joseph Margulies, MacArthur Justice Center Assistant Director; Clyde Murphy, Civil Rights Attorney; Ricardo Meza, MALDEF Midwest Regional Counsel, Joe Russo, MOPD Director of Compliance, and Mary Meg McCarthy, NIJC Executive Director. Professor Geoffrey Stone, The University of Chicago Law School and Co-Chair, American Constitution Society Chicago Lawyer Chapter Board of Advisors, keynoted the event and Janine Hoft, Attorney, People’s Law Office and Member, NLG Chicago Board, moderated the discussion. Over fifty members of the public attended the discussion, which addressed the direction of the current Court, focusing on aspects of “judicial activism” and “originalism.” The panelists also postulated the type of matters that a progressive Court would be accepting for review. An engaging question and answer session followed the program.
