Virginia Marriage Amendment Debate at UVA
On October 5th, 2006, ACS's University of Virginia Student Chapter hosted a debate on the question, "Should the Virginia Constitution be amended to prevent legal recognition for same sex couples?" Arguing in the affirmative was Delegate Bob Marshall of the Virginia House of Delegates, co-sponsor of the proposed Marshall-Newman Amendment, which is up for voter approval on the November ballot. Opposing the measure was Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry and author of Why Marriage Matters. The debate was moderated by Slate.com senior editor and Supreme Court commentator Dahlia Lithwick.
