On Thursday October 11, 2007, the Austin Lawyer Chapter hosted an event entitled "The Constitutionality of Section Five of the Voting Rights Act." The discussion focused on Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District Number One v. Gonzales, its challenge to Section Five of the recently renewed Voting Rights Act, and the potential ramifications of the case on congressional power and voting rights in America. Panelists included Kristen Clarke Co-Director, Political Participation Group, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.; Sam Hirsch, partner, Jenner & Block LLP; Nina Perales, Regional Counsel, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund; and Gregory S. Coleman, partner, Yetter & Warden L.L.P. The discussion was moderated by Patrick Woolley, Beck, Redden & Secrest Professor,University of Texas School of Law; and was co-sponsored by the Democracy and Voting Issue Group of the American Constitution Society.
