The Missouri Plan Under Fire?
The Missouri Plan Under Fire:
a discussion on how the model for non-partisan judicial selection is being attacked and what the Missouri Bar is doing to protect it
In 1940, to combat the influence of politics in the judicial selection process, Missouri adopted the non-partisan court plan. The plan has served as a national model and has been adopted in more than 30 states. The plan relies on a commission of members elected by the Missouri Bar, appointed by the Governor, and the Chief Justice who select three candidates to present to the Governor for a specific appointment. Now, critics are seeking to overturn the plan to ensure "greater political accountability". Skip Walther will discuss the Missouri Bar’s continued support for the current plan as well as the efforts being undertaken to overturn the selection process.
Skip Walther is the current Vice President of the Missouri Bar, a former Boone County Prosecuting Attorney, and a MU Law Alumni.
