On September 23rd, Seattle University welcomed constitutional scholar, professor, and dean Erwin Chemerinsky for a lively discussion on "The Roberts Court and the Future of Constitutional Law." Following an introduction by Seattle University Law Professor and Associate Dean Tayyub Mahmud, the ~80-100 attendees enjoyed hearing Chemerinsky's take on the recent Heller decision and other current constitutional issues both during his speech and afterwards for a catered Q&A reception.

Constitution in the Classroom

On September 17th, Constitution Day, volunteers from the Seattle University ACS Student Chapter and the Puget Sound ACS Lawyer's Chapter taught 250 middle school students basic concepts about the Constitution with a focus on the Bill of Rights. Various strategies were utilized to encourage class participation, such as a game of jeopardy, role-playing arrests, performing mock trials, and even engaging in a 3-way tug of war to illustrate balance of powers. This age group (11-14) has a keen sense of fairness, and students could clearly see the logic of having three branches of government limited by the fundamentals of the Bill of Rights. Students also gained a greater appreciation for how these founding documents are relevant to their lives today.
This is the second year the Seattle University Chapter has partnered with Meany Middle School for "Constitution in the Classroom"; the program proved so successful with 7th graders last year that the school requested we teach the Constitution to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Social Studies classes in 2008, and possibly 2009. This year, we were pleased to offer all students pocket constitutions, and extend teaching opportunities to the Lawyer's Chapter.
