Virginia Marriage Amendment Debate at UVA

On October 5th, 2006, ACS's University of Virginia Student Chapter hosted a debate on the question, "Should the Virginia Constitution be amended to prevent legal recognition for same sex couples?" Arguing in the affirmative was Delegate Bob Marshall of the Virginia House of Delegates, co-sponsor of the proposed Marshall-Newman Amendment, which is up for voter approval on the November ballot. Opposing the measure was Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry and author of Why Marriage Matters. The debate was moderated by Slate.com senior editor and Supreme Court commentator Dahlia Lithwick. Streaming audio of the event is available.

Judging Innocence: House v. Bell and Holmes v. South Carolina

On Tuesday, February 28 the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy sponsored a brown-bag lunch discussion entitled "Judging Innocence: House v. Bell and Holmes v. South Carolina. University of Virginia School of Law Professor Brandon Garrett gave the talk on two innocence cases before the Supreme Court this term. His remarks were based on a recent article he co-authored that appeared in The National Law Journal. A story about the event ran in the Virginia Law Weekly.

The talk was given by former German Constitutional Court Justice Dieter Grimm. Small Group Discussion with Professor Akhil Amar

On Wednesday, March 29 the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy and the Virginia Law Review co-hosted a small group discussion with Yale Law School Professor Akhil Amar. Professor Amar was at the University of Virginia to participate in a panel discussion on his book "America's Constitution: A Biography." Professor Amar discussed liberalism and originalism and encouraged progressives to reclaim the Constitution as a progressive document that it is.

Moore Society for International Law and the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy at the Universtiy of Virginia School of Law co-sponsored a lunchtime talk entitled "Islam and the Freedom of Speech: A Discussion of the Danish Cartoons. University of Virginia Religious Studies Professor Abdulaziz Sachedina gave the talk and led a discussion.
