The Global War on Terror: Setting the Record Straight

ACS and the Federalist Society co-sponsored a talk by former Undersecretary of Defense Douglas Feith. The talk examined the Bush administration's approach to contentious issues like war-making and detainee policy. Over 200 students attended.

A Land Twice Promised

Noa Baum is an internationally known professional storyteller who was born in raised in Jerusalem during the turmoil of the '60s and '70s. She tells the story of the friendship she developed with a Palestinian woman while living in America. In this one-woman theater production, she weaves together the story of their developing friendship and the experiences of their mothers--two generations of women living on opposite sides of a long-standing struggle.

Storyteller Noa Baum, an Israeli who began a heartfelt dialogue with a Palestinian woman while living in the United States, weaves together their memories and their mothers' stories. She creates a moving testimony illuminating the complex and contradictory history and emotions that surround Jerusalem for Israelis and Palestinians alike.

Stephen Abraham on Guantanamo Due Process

Stephen Abraham, lawyer in Newport Beach and retired Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army Reserves, will speak about his experiences at Guantanamo, his duties with the Office for the Administrative Review of the Detention of Enemy Combatants (OARDEC) and the events that led to the submission of his declaration to the United States Supreme Court, culminating in its historic reversal and opinion affirming the right of habeus corpus relief for detainees at Guantanamo. Lunch (from Beyond Thai) will be provided. Tuesday, October 6 at 12:00 pm in Vanderbilt 202. This is an amazing opportunity to meet an exceptional person and lawyer in a small-group setting.

"Standing up for the Rule of Law?" with Charles Swift

Charles Swift, former lieutenant commander, U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General Corps, is best known for having served as defense counsel in the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld. He will discuss his battle for recognizing rights of the detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Swift is a regular commentator on national news programming on issues of national security, military justice, terrorism, and piracy. He has appeared on Countdown with Keith Olberman, Hardball with Chris Matthews, Bill Moyers Journal, State of the Union with John King, NOW on PBS, and National Public Radio.
